For years, one of the most common complaints from international travelers arriving at Cancún International Airport was the long wait times at immigration checkpoints. However, recent efforts by the National Migration Institute (INM) and airport authorities have significantly improved the process. According to La Jornada Maya, immigration procedures have now been reduced to under 20 minutes thanks to a combination of technological upgrades and operational adjustments.

Technological and Operational Improvements

This achievement is largely due to the implementation of automated immigration kiosks, known as e-Gates, which allow passengers with electronic passports to complete their entry process without direct interaction with an officer. In addition, the INM has reinforced staffing levels, particularly during peak travel hours.

As a result, wait times during high-traffic periods have reportedly dropped to as little as seven minutes, with an average range between 20 and 40 minutes. This marks a significant improvement compared to previous years, when wait times could easily exceed three hours during holiday seasons.

Recent Issues and Institutional Response

Not everything has gone smoothly, though. In early 2025, various media outlets such as Reportur and Canal 10 Noticias reported technical failures in the immigration system that caused delays of up to four hours in Terminals 3 and 4. These issues led to frustration among both tourists and local tourism operators, who criticized the inadequate use and functionality of the technology.

The Hotel Association of the Mexican Caribbean also expressed concern, pointing out that delays in immigration negatively affect the first impression tourists have of the destination.

In response to these incidents, authorities implemented corrective actions. As reported by Canal 10 Noticias, more than 100 additional federal officers were deployed, e-Gates were expanded across all terminals, and training was provided to staff to improve service quality. Furthermore, improvements were made to airport Wi-Fi and an information portal was launched to assist travelers upon arrival.

Strategic Importance for Tourism

Cancún International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Latin America in terms of international flights and serves as a key entry point to the Mexican Caribbean. Efficient immigration processes are not just about convenience—they play a major role in shaping a traveler’s first impression and contribute to the overall competitiveness of the destination.

In today’s global travel landscape, the experience matters as much as the destination itself. Streamlined entry procedures can be a deciding factor for repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth, both of which are vital for maintaining a strong tourism economy.

Final Thoughts

The reduction in immigration wait times at Cancún Airport represents an important step forward for the region’s tourism infrastructure. While recent setbacks have highlighted the need for ongoing oversight, the swift response and recent improvements indicate a clear commitment to delivering a better experience for travelers. Maintaining and strengthening these measures will be essential as international traffic continues to grow.
